Mrs. Colleen France « Teacher Connection / Documents / Calendar

Welcome back to a new school year! We are going to have a fabulous year!! Picture Day is Wednesday, August 22. Uniforms are required. AR Goals for the first nine weeks will be set soon and the library opens on Monday, August 13. Your child will be allowed to check out two books to read and test on. One visit to the library per day is allowed. Happy Reading!

Our focus in English Language Arts for this week is main topic and key details. Our comprehension strategy is visualize and our vocabulary strategy is inflectional endings: s, es, ed, and ing. The story this week is "Little Flap Learns to Fly" and the genre is fantasy. Our grammar will be on sentences that are either statements or questions. Our phonics skill is on words that have the short a and i, such as in words has and fix. Our spelling assessments are on Fridays, unless otherwise noted. Your child will have a username and password to www.connected.mcgraw-hill.com to practice ELA strategies. Our cold reads are every other Friday with a Selection Test every other week on our weekly story. In writing we will start with main ideas and key details and color coding topic + point = main idea.

Our Math focus is on understanding place value and fluently adding and subtracting within 20 using mental math strategies. We will start with modeling ones, tens, and hundreds and then move to number patterns and comparing numbers. We will also be practicing word problems and solving for the unknown variable, as well. Your child will have a username and password to www.thinkcentral.com to practice math skills. Our Chapter 3 Math Assessment will be Thursday, August 30.

In Social Studies we are starting with Chapter 1: My Community, My Country. We are going to use vocabulary words like community, citizen, respect, responsible, government, rights, vote, and freedom. The students will be able to identify ways citizens can help in their community and know the rights that American citizens have. Our Chapter One assessment will be at the end of August.

Our class is collecting box tops and soup can labels.  Please feel free to send any you may have in with your child anytime.

Mrs. France :)
